Firefly is seeking a reliable, self-motivated 2nd Assistant Superintendent to join our Golf Course Maintenance team.The property is located approximately 30 miles south of downtown Nashville and approximately 15 miles south of downtown Franklin, on the east side of I-65 in Maury County. The gated entrance to the community will be on Highway 431, about 5 miles south of the new June Lake exit on I-65.
Firefly will feature a core 18-hole golf course and a 9-hole short course designed by Andrew Green, who has been critically acclaimed for his renovation of classic designs at Scioto, Congressional, Interlachen, Inverness, Oak Hill, and most recently East Lake. This will be Andrew Green's first original design.

Position Summary
The 2nd Assistant Superintendent is an emerging leader within Firefly's agronomy team, supporting daily golf course maintenance operations while learning all facets of modern golf course management and course construction. This role provides a structured path toward Senior Assistant Superintendent responsibilities through hands-on turf work, project management, crew leadership, and agronomic decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Agronomic Execution & Cultural Practices:
- Assist in planning and executing daily maintenance schedules for greens, tees, fairways, and native areas.
- Apply fertilizers and plant protectants, ensuring accurate calibration, and documentation.
- Support moisture management strategies including hand watering, TDR utilization, and scouting.
- Aid in monitoring and adjusting irrigation system performance, reporting issues promptly.
Course Conditioning & Presentation:
- Uphold Firefly's conditioning standards focused on firm, fast, and aesthetically elite surfaces.
- Perform detail work including bunkers, edging, course setup, native area refinement, and finish work to maintain premium presentation.
Team Leadership & Training:
- Lead small crews, ensuring clear communication of expectations and safety protocols.
- Assist with onboarding and training new team members on equipment operation, best practices, cultural standards, and agronomy principles.
- Lead weekend shifts with entire maintenance team. (Every third weekend)
Project Support & Grow-In Experience:
- Work with the Senior Assistant and Superintendent on grow-in programs, including sprig management, establishment timelines, fertility schedules, and surface development.
- Assist with irrigation troubleshooting, drainage installation, construction tie-ins, sod/seed preparation, and course development projects.
- Operate various golf course maintenance equipment to ensure quality control.
Communication & Professional Development:
- Participate in departmental meetings, leadership discussions, and scouting walks.
- Learn to assess agronomic conditions, recommend solutions, and communicate priorities to team members and leadership.
- Maintain professionalism when interacting with contractors, members, and guests.
Required Qualifications:
- Enrollment in or completion of a turfgrass or related program is preferred; equivalent experience considered.
- Passion for turfgrass management with a desire to advance into an Assistant Superintendent role.
- Ability to safely operate and learn golf course maintenance equipment.
- Strong work ethic with willingness to work early mornings, weekends, and weather-based schedules.
- Ability to lead by example and maintain high presentation standards.
Preferred Competencies:
- Knowledge of irrigations systems, calibration, and chemical/fertilizer fundamentals.
- Willingness to learn moisture management, data-driven decision making, and surface refinement techniques.
- Team-oriented mindset with developing leadership skills.
Physical Demands:
- Regularly stands, walks and sits for extended periods. Regularly uses hands and arms for reaching, handling, and operating equipment. Communicates effectively through talking and hearing. Occasionally climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, tastes, or smells. Occasionally required to lift more than 100 pounds.
Environment/Noise:
- Regularly works in wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and around moving mechanical parts. Occasionally works in extreme cold or heat (non-weather); risk of electrical shock and vibration. May occasionally work in high or precarious places and be exposed to fumes, airborne particles. or toxic/caustic chemicals. Frequently works outdoors in various weather conditions with moderate noise level.
