About White Deer Run Golf ClubAn 18-hole, par-72 public course in Chicago's North Suburbs, White Deer Run was designed by Dick & Tim Nugent and opened in 1998. Built on the historic Cuneo Estate, it spans roughly 240 acres of rolling terrain with multiple lakes and strong practice facilities (range, putting green, practice bunker). Course ratings include Black: 74.5 / 148 (men), with multiple tee options to challenge all levels.
Role Summary
White Deer Run Golf Club is seeking a hands-on, growth-minded Assistant Superintendent to help lead daily course maintenance, crew development, and agronomic programs. You'll partner closely with the Superintendent to deliver excellent playing conditions and elevate standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and participate in daily course setup (mowing, rolling, bunkers, pin/tee locations).
- Plan and execute cultural practices (aeration, topdressing, verticutting).
- Mix, calibrate, and apply fertilizers/plant protectants; maintain application records.
- Monitor turf health, moisture, and disease pressure; recommend timely adjustments.
- Lead, train, and schedule a seasonal crew; model safety and quality standards.
- Operate and troubleshoot irrigation system; coordinate basic repairs.
- Coordinate with Equipment Manager on preventative maintenance.
- Support tournament/event prep and special projects; assist with winter work/snow ops.
- Uphold budget awareness, inventory control, and regulatory compliance.
Educational Requirements
- Certificate or degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 2+ seasons on a golf course maintenance team; prior leadership preferred.
Experience Requirements
- Ability to obtain Illinois Pesticide Applicator license within 90 days (current license preferred).
- Solid irrigation knowledge; comfortable operating a wide range of turf equipment.
- Positive communicator and team builder with a lead-by-example mindset.
- Able to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays in season; lift 50+ lbs and work outdoors in varying conditions.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
