Position Summary
The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent supports the Golf Course Superintendent in daily management and maintenance of the golf course, grounds, and related facilities. This role helps ensure excellent playing conditions, safe operations, and effective crew management while upholding the club's standards for turf quality and aesthetics.
Key Responsibilities
Course Maintenance and Responsibilities
- Assist with planning, scheduling, and executing all agronomic practices, including mowing, fertilization, irrigation, topdressing, aerification, and pest/weed control.
- Monitor turfgrass health and identify issues such as disease, pests, moisture stress, and nutrient deficiencies.
- Maintain all landscaped areas, practice facilities, bunkers, greens, tees, fairways, and roughs.
- Complete all requirements to become a Certified Category 3B Licensed applicator in accordance with the state of Indiana.
- Ensure proper calibration, mixing, and application of fertilizers and pesticides.
Irrigation System Management
- Operate, troubleshoot, and repair irrigation systems, pumps, and controllers.
- Adjust watering schedules based on turf needs, weather conditions, and course events.
Crew Leadership
- Assist in hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating maintenance staff.
- Provide hands-on leadership and ensure safe and efficient work practices.
- Communicate daily job assignments and oversee task quality.
Equipment and Facility Upkeep
- Report equipment needs, repairs, and safety issues to the equipment manager or superintendent.
- Help maintain clean, organized, and safe maintenance facilities.
Course Set Up and Tournament Preparation
- Oversee daily course setup including hole locations, tee markers, signs, and hazard markings.
- Assist with special event and tournament preparation to ensure championship-level conditions.
Proper Record Keeping
- Maintain records of chemical applications, irrigation, weather, and maintenance practices.
- Ensure compliance with government regulations regarding chemical usage, water management, and worker safety.
Qualifications
- Preferred degree or certificate in turfgrass management, horticulture, agronomy, or related field
- 2-4 years of golf course maintenance experience; prior supervisory experience is a plus.
- Ability to obtain (or possess) state pesticide applicator license.
- Working knowledge of turf equipment, irrigation systems, and modern agronomic practices.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Willingness to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required by golf operations.
