DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:An employee in this class assists the Golf Course Superintendent in planning,
scheduling, and supervising the maintenance of turf, trees, and landscaped areas on
the golf course. Work includes daily monitoring of course conditions, specialized turf
management on greens, tees, and fairways, operation of motorized equipment,
pesticide and fertilizer applications, basic irrigation system maintenance, and general
groundskeeping. The employee exercises independent judgment in making decisions
regarding safe equipment operation, pin placement on greens, and temporary course
closures or restrictions when conditions warrant. The Golf Course Assistant
Superintendent is also responsible for training and directing seasonal and full-time
maintenance staff in proper mowing techniques, cultural practices, and safety
procedures. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Golf Course
Superintendent and is evaluated through periodic inspections of course conditions and
feedback from golfers and supervisors.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the Golf Course Superintendent in planning and scheduling daily and
seasonal maintenance activities for greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and
landscaped areas. - Monitor turf conditions regularly for signs of disease, pests, stress, or damage
and report or respond with appropriate treatment measures. - Supervise and participate in mowing, edging, trimming, topdressing, aeration,
over-seeding, and other turf cultural practices. - Assist with chemical and fertilizer applications, including calibration of equipment
and safe handling, mixing, and storage of products. - Perform and oversee routine maintenance and repairs of irrigation lines, heads,
and controllers; help monitor soil moisture and adjust irrigation schedules as
needed. - Operate and train staff on the safe use of equipment such as greens mowers,
fairway mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, sprayers, aerators, and other turf
equipment. - Make recommendations and decisions regarding pin placement, tee marker
positioning, and temporary course restrictions to protect turf and ensure player
safety. - Inspect and help maintain bunkers, cart paths, drainage areas, and tree lines;
coordinate debris removal, pruning, and storm clean-up as needed. - Assist with training, directing, and overseeing maintenance staff and seasonal
employees, including assigning tasks and monitoring work quality. - Promote and maintain a safe work environment by following and enforcing safety
procedures and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). - Interact courteously with golfers and the public, providing direction regarding
course flow, closed areas, and maintenance operations. - Assist in maintaining equipment, tools, and facilities in clean, safe, and good
working order; report major repair needs to the Superintendent. - Keep basic records related to chemical applications, irrigation adjustments, and
course maintenance activities as directed. - Perform related duties as assigned by the Golf Course Superintendent or Parks
& Recreation leadership.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Working knowledge of turfgrass management principles and practices,
particularly as they apply to golf course greens, tees, and fairways. - Knowledge of golf course maintenance equipment, safe operating procedures,
and routine equipment care. - Knowledge of pesticide and fertilizer use, including calibration, application
techniques, and safety procedures. - Basic knowledge of irrigation systems and methods for monitoring and
maintaining soil moisture. - Ability to identify common turf diseases, pests, and stress conditions and assist
in implementing appropriate control measures. - Ability to read and follow labels, safety data sheets (SDS), maintenance
schedules, and written instructions. - Ability to supervise and train staff in proper mowing techniques, equipment
operation, and safety practices. - Ability to exercise sound judgment in decisions affecting turf health, course
playability, and public safety. - Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with staff, golfers, vendors,
and supervisors. - Ability to work independently and as part of a team, organizing daily tasks and
adjusting to changing weather and course conditions
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work in this class is described as medium to heavy and frequently requires physical
exertion to complete tasks. The employee must be able to stand and walk for extended
periods over uneven terrain; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push,
pull, and lift or carry equipment and materials up to approximately 50 pounds, and
occasionally heavier objects with assistance. The position requires sufficient visual
acuity to operate mowers and other equipment safely, observe turf conditions, and read
gauges, labels, and written instructions. Work is performed primarily outdoors in varying
weather conditions including heat, cold, sun, rain, and wind, with exposure to dust,
pollen, noise, and chemical products used in turf maintenance. Reasonable
accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the
essential functions.
DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school or GED, supplemented by coursework or training in
turfgrass management, horticulture, agronomy, or a related field. Experience in golf
course maintenance or sports turf management is highly desirable. Any combination of
education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will
be considered.
