TerraPower's Molten Chloride Fast Reactor (MCFR) program is commercializing the technology to operate a fast spectrum, chloride salt cooled molten salt reactor. The Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment (MCRE) is slated to be the first liquid-fueled, fast spectrum reactor built and operated, and will be constructed at Idaho National Laboratory.
Plant Integration, Project Engineer, MCFR
TerraPower is seeking a Plant Integration Project Engineer to support the Molten Chloride Fast Reactor (MCFR) program and the Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment (MCRE). This position reports to the MCRE Director of Project Delivery. The role centers on delivering an integrated plant design, beginning with MCRE and evolving toward future MCFR projects. You'll collaborate with the entire project team and senior leadership in a high-performing, multi-disciplinary environment to deliver an integrated plant design package that is ready for turnover to an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company. This position requires onsite work (up to 5 days a week) at the TerraPower Bellevue, WA office to interface with the rest of the Engineering Design Team. As needed, onsite work at the TerraPower Everett, WA laboratory may be required. A Washington State Professional Engineer license is preferred.
Responsibilities:
• Ensure the plant design packages are complete, constructable, and ready to be used by an EPC company to procure and build the plant.
• Own master bill of materials that drive design and/or purchase list to complete procurement of every part (delivery of everything from major components to gaskets and bolts).
• Ensure on time delivery of process hardware, specifically the fuel handling, cover gas, and air process systems.
• Assess cross-disciplinary gaps/collisions and provide clear directions to design owners driving resolution of conflicts.
• Interface with system leads and subject matter experts in piping, structures, I&C, and electrical engineering to advance all design lockstep and concurrently while implementing state of the art concurrent engineering with design for excellence (DFX).
• Support constructability reviews and review of installation plans/instructions.
• Responsible for identifying engineering challenges and driving to right-sized solutions.
• Responsible for engineering rigor applied to the full lifecycle (design, test, manufacture, commission, build, decommission) of systems and components.
• Responsible for continuous integration of lessons learned from test engineering, separate effects tests, and other testing activities into MCFR design.
• Responsible for supporting management of suppliers providing engineering and fabrication services.
• Responsible for Project Acceptance of engineering deliverables, including design specifications, drawings, P&IDs, engineering calculation, plant lists, SOWs, etc..
• Provide project direction to MCFR Group Leads and System Leads.
• Commission and/or oversee development of technical work scope and budget estimates for new work, often spanning multiple disciplines.
• Develop the project resource plan/requests by using input from the project and disciplines
• Determine technical project execution direction based on cost, schedule, risk, and input from engineering and project management
• Ensure that project technical execution are in accordance with contract requirements, project standards and industry standards
• Develop, maintain, use, and incorporate project deliverables (budget, schedule, risk registers, lessons learned, etc)
• Resolve technical conflicts in conjunction with engineering and project management when issues arise that compete for resources. Elevate those that cannot be resolved at the Project level to the Program level.
• Assist Project Manager in driving and holding project teams accountable for achieving project deliverables.
• Effectively communicate current and future risks to the Project Manager.
Key Qualifications and Skills:
• Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering with 15 years of relevant experience for level 12, or 18 years of relevant experience for level 13. Experience level may be partially substituted for advanced degree depending on position relevance.
• Demonstrated experience in the design and build of industrial process equipment and associated systems and structures.
• Working knowledge of plant design software (AutoCAD Plant3D/Navisworks and Solidworks preferred)
• Working knowledge of piping analysis software (AutoPIPE preferred or Caesar).
• In-depth knowledge of piping components such as valves, fittings, and supports.
• Experience in high temperature and multi-discipline integration (highly desired).
• Previous experience with nuclear reactors, nuclear handling process systems, or similar high-performance system or equipment design (highly desired).
• Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
• Attention to detail and aspiration for technical excellence.
• Candidate must be a self-starter and possess ability to work independently with minimal direction.
• Ability to handle projects that include many competing objectives and constraints, with ability to resolve conflicts between objectives.
• Ability to work on simultaneous tasks that require a multi-disciplinary approach.
• Experience working to quality standards on design activities, such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001 (highly desired).
• Strong communication skills.
• The candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect, and a desire to foster teamwork
• Actual position starting level and title will be determined based on assessment of qualifications
The Ideal candidate:
• WA PE license or ability to obtain one promptly.
• Experience in mechanical, nuclear, process, and/or electrical engineering.
• Experience working with high-temperature fluids.
• Experience with ASME Section III, Division 5.
• Experience in reactor operations, including start-up testing.
• Experience with software quality assurance (SQA).
• Familiarity with Commercial Grade Dedication (CGD).
• Experience in project management, including schedule development
• Proficiency with Atlassian tools including Confluence and Jira.

Salary Range Level 12: $168,316 - $252,475
Salary Range Level 13: $196,537 - $294,806
*Typically, our employee salaries are within .90 1.0 of the mid-point of the posted salary bands. Any salary offered within the posted salary band is based on market data and commensurate with the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. This range is specific to Washington State.
