- Seasonal Irrigation Ditch Rider
Description
The University of Wyoming is seeking a motivated Seasonal Ditch Rider to assist with irrigation system operations in the Brush Creek Irrigation System near Ryan Park, Wyoming.
This position supports daily water delivery operations across the Brush Creek watershed and plays an important role in maintaining irrigation infrastructure and ensuring equitable water distribution to agricultural users.
The position involves independent fieldwork in remote, high-elevation environments and provides hands-on experience in irrigation management, agricultural water systems, and water administration. It is well suited for students or early-career professionals interested in agriculture, water resources, hydrology, or natural resource management.
Pay
$18.00 – $25.00 per hour (depending on experience)
Schedule
Up to 6 days per week
Possible overtime depending on irrigation demands
Seasonal Dates
May 15 – July 15 (2 months guaranteed)
Start dates as early as April 15 may be available.
Potential extension on additional projects after July.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Adjust, monitor, and maintain irrigation headgates and water control structures
- Clear debris and vegetation from canals, diversions, and irrigation infrastructure
- Conduct routine inspections of ditches and water delivery systems
- Perform basic maintenance and minor repairs on irrigation infrastructure
- Monitor water flows and help ensure equitable water distribution
- Identify and report leaks, infrastructure issues, and delivery problems
- Assist with seasonal startup and shutdown of irrigation systems
- Operate ATVs and 4WD vehicles to access irrigation infrastructure
- Maintain basic field notes and operational records
- Follow established safety and water management procedures
- Perform additional duties supporting irrigation system operations
Work Environment
- Extensive outdoor work in agricultural and mountain environments
- Work at moderate to high elevations
- Exposure to heat, cold, wind, rain, and moving water
- Regular use of ATVs and field vehicles
- Physical labor including walking, lifting, bending, and climbing

Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Ability to work independently in remote outdoor environments
- Willingness to perform physical labor at moderate to high elevation
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
- Ability to lift and carry equipment (approximately 50 lbs)
- Comfort working around moving water and irrigation structures
- Ability to swim
- Strong work ethic and reliability
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest in irrigation management, agriculture, or water resources
- Prior experience with irrigation systems or ditch riding
- Familiarity with:
- ATVs and 4WD vehicles
- Chainsaws and basic hand tools
- Canal and headgate systems
- Basic mechanical or maintenance skills
