Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.
The Senior Hydrogeologist and the Principal Hydrogeologist are the third and fourth level in a five level hydrogeologist series. These positions are responsible for planning organizing conducting and overseeing geologic and hydrogeologic services and studies. The Senior Hydrogeologist is distinguished from the Hydrogeologist by project management responsibilities. The Senior Hydrogeologist is distinguished from the Principal Hydrogeologist which has larger project management responsibilities increased supervisory responsibilities and increased experience requirements.
Examples of Duties
The following essential job functions are typical for this classification. Supervises employees including prioritizing and assigning work conducting performance evaluations ensuring staff are trained and making hiring termination and disciplinary recommendations.
Performs project management including defining project requirements timelines and resources coordinating with staff and external consultants preparing requests for proposals reviewing bids and selecting consultants preparing agenda submittals tracking and reporting project progress and costs managing changes in project scope and change orders monitoring schedules and performing related activities.
Performs administrative functions including maintaining records and files preparing presentations coordinating and scheduling meetings preparing purchase orders preparing protocol coding for database management and performing related duties.
Prepares technical documentation on hydrogeological issues.
Conducts geologic and hydrogeological studies and compiles analyzes and interprets geologic and hydrogeologic data.
Provides hydrogeologic input and review for District projects managed by other individuals.
Prepares contract documents and retains contractors for District projects.
Conducts hydrogeological investigations on issues of concern to producers.
Conducts groundwater modeling.
Prepares lithologic cross sections.
Manages operations and maintenance of assigned facilities.
Develops methodologies for collecting and storing data.
Prepares conceptual facility designs.
Handles job stress.
Interacts effectively with others in the workplace.
Follows all workplace and job safety rules and policies.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as required.
Principal Hydrogeologist Additional Responsibilities
Mentors and reviews work of other staff.
Manages large and complex projects.
Conducts presentations.
Prepares and manages project budgets and contracts.
Independently develops project concepts proposals and scopes of work including identifying and evaluating project alternatives.
Interacts with outside agencies producers and other groups.
Manages and critiques groundwater modeling.
Reviews lithologic cross sections.
Designs extraction injection and monitoring wells based on field data including lithologic and geophysical logs.
Provides support for public affairs for District projects as needed.
Reviews and evaluates hydrogeologic data water quality data and proposed work at sites impacted by contaminant releases and provides comments to lead oversight agencies including California Environmental Protection Agency Department of Toxic Substances Control California Environmental Protection Agency Regional Water Quality Control Board and United States Environmental Protection Agency.
Provides technical support for District cost recovery efforts related to groundwater remediation.
Requirements
Typical Qualifications
The following describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform assigned duties.
Knowledge includes geologic and hydrogeologic processes and principles. Knowledge of borehole drilling and well construction methods and design. Knowledge of mathematical concepts. Knowledge of planning development and design principles. Knowledge of project management principles and methods. Knowledge of supervisory principles.
Ability and skills include monitoring and evaluating employees. Prioritizing and assigning work. Writing technical reports. Monitoring project budgets. Using computers and related software applications. Managing projects. Conducting studies. Analyzing and interpreting data. Communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange or convey information and receive work direction.
The Principal Hydrogeologist also requires the ability to prepare and deliver oral presentations using PowerPoint.
Education and Experience Guidelines
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
Education and Training includes a Bachelors Degree in Geology Hydrogeology or a closely related field. A Masters Degree is preferred. California registration as a professional geologist is required.
Experience for Senior Hydrogeologist includes six years of professional level hydrogeologist experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform essential duties.
Experience for Principal Hydrogeologist includes ten years of professional level hydrogeologist experience including at least three years of project management or supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform essential duties.
Preferred Experience includes groundwater modeling and quantitative hydrogeologic analysis. Experience developing calibrating executing and interpreting groundwater flow and solute transport models. Experience using computer software and programming tools to construct conceptual and numerical models perform pre processing and post processing of model inputs and outputs evaluate model sensitivity and uncertainty and apply results to real world hydrogeologic conditions. Relevant tools may include GW Vistas Python workflows and ArcGIS.
Individuals with relevant engineering experience who meet Senior Engineer or Principal Engineer requirements are also welcome to apply. Candidates with a Bachelors Degree in civil engineering and Professional Engineer registration in the State of California along with a valid California Drivers License will be considered.

A valid California Class C Drivers License is required.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
Conditions include talking hearing seeing and repetitive motions. Light work includes exerting up to twenty pounds occasionally and up to ten pounds frequently. Employees may be exposed to moving mechanical parts odors dust extreme temperatures noise workspace restrictions and travel. Employees must be able to work in an office setting stand or sit for prolonged periods operate office equipment including a computer keyboard lift and carry light amounts of weight and verbally communicate information.
Vision must be sufficient to read computer screens printed documents and operate assigned equipment with or without correction.
Hearing must be within normal audio range with or without correction.
Disaster Service Workers
All employees are designated Disaster Service Workers under California Government Code Sections 3100 through 3109. Employees are required to complete all related training and return to work as ordered during an emergency.
