Company Overview
The Johnson County Park and Recreation District (“JCPRD”) is an urban park and recreation special district of the State of Kansas, established under Kansas state statutes (K.S.A. 19-2859 et. seq.). Its boundaries encompass all of Johnson County, Kansas, a part of the Kansas City metropolitan area.
In 2017 JCPRD was awarded the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management presented by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The award's Class I, which is for agencies serving a population over 400,000, is the largest of the five population-based categories.
JCPRD operates and maintains 13 developed park areas, two future park sites, a streamway parks system, and two public golf courses. JCPRD properties comprise nearly 10,000 acres. An estimated 7.75 million park visitations are recorded annually. JCPRD offers over 4,200 recreation, golf, and outdoor education programs annually with over 2.75 million participations. Recreation facilities presently owned and operated by JCPRD including but not limited to 2 multipurpose fieldhouses, a gymnastics and multiservice center, an arts and heritage center that includes the Johnson County Museum, a sports dome, a domed year-round aquatic center, 11 football fields, 23 soccer fields, 5 multipurpose fields, 33 softball/baseball fields. Outdoor education facilities include a nature center, amphitheater and a challenge course with a welcome center. The Park Police Department employs fully commissioned park police officers to protect and preserve natural resources and maintain safety for visitors and staff. JCPRD’s annual operating budget for all funds is approximately $51 million of which approximately $18 million is tax supported. JCPRD employs 239 full-time and over 1,300 seasonal, part-time employees.
