- Wastewater Operator ( I, II, III, Senior)
Description
The City of Oxnard’s Wastewater Division is seeking skilled and motivated individuals to join our Operations team at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. We are recruiting for multiple levels within the Wastewater Operator series, including Wastewater Operator I, II, III, and Senior Wastewater Operator.
Wastewater Operators work collaboratively with Operations, Maintenance, Collections, and Laboratory staff to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the City's wastewater treatment facilities and processes.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Depending on classification and level of responsibility, duties may include:
- Monitor and operate wastewater treatment systems, equipment, and processes to maintain compliance with applicable discharge permits.
- Monitor plant and field processes, including solids processing, computer alarms, instruments, gauges, meters, and control panels.
- Take and interpret meter, gauge, and control panel readings; monitor and adjust flows and processes within established operating parameters.
- Collect wastewater and process samples and perform routine biological, chemical, and field analyses; record and evaluate results and take appropriate corrective action.
- Maintain accurate operation logs, shift reports, sampling records, regulatory records, and other operational documentation.
- Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, cleaning, housekeeping, and minor maintenance and repair of plant equipment and facilities.
- Use and maintain Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Manuals and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and update documentation as needed.
- Troubleshoot process and equipment issues and coordinate with Maintenance staff when mechanical or electrical repairs are required.
- Evaluate plant operations, process performance, flows, loadings, laboratory data, and equipment status and make operational adjustments to maintain compliance and optimize treatment efficiency.
- Identify operational problems and implement or recommend corrective actions and improvements.
- Provide instruction, work direction, and on-the-job training to other operators and support staff, as applicable.
- Conduct audits of operational logs and crew rounds and coordinate plant shutdowns and preventive maintenance activities.
- Enter, maintain, retrieve, and analyze operational and maintenance information using computerized systems, including CMMS and Hach WIMS.
- Support inventory monitoring and coordinate materials, chemical, and supply needs to support uninterrupted plant operations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The City is recruiting at multiple levels within the Wastewater Operator series, providing opportunities for candidates with varying levels of wastewater treatment experience, certifications, and technical expertise.
Wastewater Operator I – Performs semi-skilled and skilled operational, monitoring, sampling, maintenance, and housekeeping duties under general supervision.
Wastewater Operator II – Performs more advanced treatment plant operations, process monitoring, sampling and analysis, troubleshooting, and operational adjustments, with greater responsibility for maintaining treatment processes within established parameters.
Wastewater Operator III – Performs advanced journey-level wastewater treatment operations, including process monitoring and adjustments, troubleshooting, corrective actions, and providing instruction to other staff.
Senior Wastewater Operator – Performs advanced operational and lead responsibilities, including evaluating plant performance, implementing real-time process adjustments, troubleshooting operational issues, coordinating with Maintenance and Collections, conducting operational audits, and providing work direction and training to operators and support staff.
BENEFITS
Depending on classification and eligibility, employees represented by the IUOE may be eligible for:
Educational Incentive: 2.5% increase in base wages for completion of 30 work-related college semester units above the minimum education requirements.
Tuition Reimbursement: 50% reimbursement of eligible work-related educational expenses, up to $500 per fiscal year for full-time employees.
Certification Pay: $100 per pay period differential for qualifying certifications that are at least one level above the minimum certification requirement of the classification.
